Hamster Pups!

So prior to our dog and cats we use to do “caged animals”. I figured less mess or at least a confined mess. I already had three boys I was dealing with and I really felt like a maid half the time. In any event, we bought two hamsters for the boys. In the beginning, we kept them in the same cage. Well that was at least until we found out one of them was pregnant. Mama was certainly getting rounder (don’t we all?) so we decided to look up some information so that we would be prepared for the birth.

First things first we separated the hamsters. The average gestation period for hamsters is anywhere from eighteen to twenty five days from conceiving. We also learned hamsters can give birth to litters with as many as eighteen baby hamsters. YIKES! However, that is uncommon and most litters on average produce approximately four to eight hamster pups. Of course not being the average family our hamster had ten hamster pups!

On July 1, 2005 our two hamsters River Rat and Mud Dog were proud parents to ten baby hamster pups. The boys named them all: Seadog, Victoria, St. Nick, Mudrat, Antonio, Mommaroo, Dirt Devil, Garbage Digger, Water Rat, and Danakin

Of course after mommy gave birth, we tried to give them their time together disturbing the cage as least as possible. Prior to the birth we made sure the cage was as sterile as a hamster cage could get so that once they were born we wouldn’t have to disrupt the babies. The first two weeks of the babies lives are most crucial so it is important not to cause unnecessary stress on the them or their mother.

Once the pups were about two weeks old we noticed their eyes beginning to open and their coat hair begin to grow. They transformed into looking like real hamsters unlike the pink hairless little creatures we once had. At this time we also began to handle them making sure we were extremely gentle.

In the end, we contacted the pet store who agreed to take the pups back. Of course they agreed to take them back for free.  Regardless of the fact that we didn’t get rich selling baby hamsters, 🙂 it was a wonderful experience for all of us to witness their life cycle from birth!

What a great experience for your kids, along with showing them to respect the mommy with her babies. You’re such a good Mom too.
