Firstborn: It’s all phonetics!

It was June 2005. My son was still in the process of vision therapy. The children’s desks at school were starting to be emptied out and all their work sent home. I received a writing journal that had been kept in school. I had never seen it before. I started to read each and every entry. The phonetic errors in his journal were rampid. How could they claim my son did not need assistive technology? Did they even understand the purpose of Assistive Technology? Assistive Technology is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. My son was not only in physical pain when he wrote but he was frustrated and his self esteem continued to be damaged.
At school he would give spelling his best shot because it would be embarrassing to ask the teacher in third grade how to spell words such as school or white. At home during homework he’s ask me how to spell almost every other word he attempted to write. I decided I would write a letter. It read:

“Dear Case Manager,”

“The resource teacher sent home my son’s writing journal from his class. This was the first time I had seen his in school journal. As I went through it I saw that he makes repeated spelling errors throughout the entire year. Please notice also that the reversal errors become less as the vision therapy progresses. I have listed the following spelling errors below. Please also notice that my son tends to make a lot of phonetic spelling mistakes. This is something that with assistive technology the Co-Writer program will address. Please explain within five business days of how the Co-Writer computer program will not be beneficial to my son or increase his functional abilities.”
